What is Class 1 Division 2? According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), a Class 1 hazardous location is one in which flammable gases or vapors may be present in sufficient quantities to be explosive. Division 2 refers to abnormal conditions. For example, LP gas or vapor in storage tanks is a Class 1 substance. The gas or vapor would be Division 2 because it would only be in the atmosphere if an accidental leakage occurred.
