Choosing a soldering iron

There are so many choices these days when it comes to selecting the right soldering tools and supplies that we thought we might take a few moments to give you our thoughts on the matter. You can choose from wireless soldering tools like Butane Solder Irons, Solder Torches, Rechargeable Solder Irons, Soldering Guns or Solder Irons that cool off almost instantly to the touch. With all these choices, how do you make the right choice? Here are some things you will need to consider before making your final purchasing decision. With what application will you be using your Soldering Tools? What type of heat will your soldering jobs require? Will you need a cordless soldering tool for more portability or will you be working at a repair bench where you will have easy access to a power supply? Once you have selected the right soldering tool for the work you need to perform you will need to choose the proper types of soldering tips you will need - a fine point tip for detail work like soldering components or a chisel tip for larger soldering jobs. Always be sure to have several spare soldering tips available. Nothing is more frustrating than needing a spare tip in the middle of a soldering job and not having one on hand. You also need to have the proper materials for cleaning those solder tips as well. Some prefer using a dampened sponge while others use Golden Curl or a very light sand paper to clean their solder iron tips. Just like any of your Electronic Tools, proper care and cleaning will prolong their life, giving you years of reliable service. If you are a beginner at the Electronics Hobby and need some practice at basic soldering techniques, you may want to consider some Mini Hobby Kits. They require a minimum amount of soldering while teaching the basics of Electronics, allowing the beginner to practice the basics of soldering without being frustrated by complicated circuits or soldering techniques.
